Jane Russell’s Way and A Strong Spirit

Jane Russell was a remarkable woman: a civic leader in Tacoma, Washington; an influential board member at numerous nonprofit organizations around the world; a generous philanthropist; a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She created and named the “People Division” at Frank Russell Company, the multinational investment advisory firm her husband, George Russell, built and headed from 1958 through 1999, and she was instrumental in the company’s being named five times by Fortune magazine as one of the best places to work in the United States. After Jane’s untimely death from cancer in 2002, George Russell wanted to create a fitting tribute to her life and work. I worked with George’s draft manuscript as well as tape transcripts and my own interviews with Jane’s friends and family members to create Jane Russell’s Way. This hardcover, 129-page narrative, ghostwritten in George’s first-person voice, tells Jane’s story from childhood through the memorial tributes that followed her death. I also edited A Strong Spirit, a companion volume that compiles the many emails, letters, and other tributes Jane received. The two volumes were privately published in a printing of 3,600 each.
